Nomicisio family

Linked to the powerful d’Avalos family, with assets and fiefdoms in various parts of the Kingdom

The Nomicisio family was among the noble families of Tropea in 1567, and from the beginning of the following century some of them became mayors of the city. They were also linked to the d'Avalos, great feudal lords of the Kingdom, and owners of various fiefdoms and assets in Calabria, Campania and Abruzzo.

Francesco Nomicisio from Tropea was also rector of the Annunziata of Naples and bishop of Lesina, in Puglia (1504).

In the mid-sixteenth century another Francesco, canon and treasurer of the chapter of Tropea, together with Covella, Diana and Prassede Romano, commissioned Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, then active in Messina to create the Madonna and Child (Madonna del Popolo), located in the right transept of the cathedral.

The Nomicisio coat of arms is still visible on the right side of the base of the statue.
