Tranfo family

From Nicotera to Tropea, the family contributed to the political and cultural life of the city

The Tranfo family of Tropea probably derives from a branch of the Transo family, who are of uncertain origin - some say Gaetan, others Provençal or Burgundian - but which also settled in Naples and Sessa Aurunca.

The Tropean family is thought to have moved in from Nicotera, as happened for other families of that city, following its enfeoffment.

Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Tranfo family owned fiefdoms in Calabria, had close family ties with the most illustrious nobility of Tropea, and some members of the family had become mayors of the city.

Archdeacon Alfonso Transo also commissioned the high altar of the Annunziata of Tropea, created by sculptors from Messina.
