Chapel of the Madonna dell’Itria

The fulcrum of underground vault in the continuity of devotion to the Virgin

The chapel of the Madonna dell'Itria, formerly called 'Ghivoritra', was founded in the crypt of the Cathedral in 1261. The importance of the chapel is demonstrated by the measures taken by bishops, such as Gregorio Diositani, who in his will (1461) ordered the chapel to be given numerous properties to maintain regular liturgical functions.

Or like Ottaviano Pasqua, who in 1579 made it the perpetual privileged altar, therefore a public oratory not tied to any family. The renewal of the architectural and ornamental appearance of the chapel dates back to the early seventeenth century, when the prelate Orazio Mattei entrusted Giovan Battista, Giovan Tommaso and Paolo Lucifero, stonecutters from Gerace, with the task of creating the polychrome marble covering of the chapel of the Madonna dell' Itria. After the earthquake of 1783 it became necessary to replace the altar, consecrated by bishop Giovanni Maria Pellicano. The fourteenth-century statue of the Virgin, located within the central aedicule inside the chapel, comes from the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Prestarona, located in the territory of the same diocese, and was transferred there in 1978.
