Fresco in the left apse

Original and refined work by an anonymous artist, created in the mid-fifteenth century in the context of the renovation of the cathedral

The fresco, which is located in the left apse of Venafro cathedral, was commissioned in 1458 by Cristoforo Mancino to commemorate his deceased wife, Covella d'Alferio di Castelpetroso. The Mancino family held the patronage of the apse thanks to Cristoforo's brother, the bishop of Venafro Antonio, who was credited with the renovation of the cathedral after the disastrous earthquake of 1456. The focus of the representation is a Madonna enthroned, wrapped in a large draped cloak, with the Child on his lap, blessing, dressed in a gold-colored tunic. Further down, lying at the feet of the Virgin, Covella is depicted, covered by a black velvet drape crossed by a large white cross: the deceased's head rests on a double pillow, her arms are crossed over her abdomen. An epigraph in Gothic characters, placed within a fake cartouche in the space between the figure of Covella and the base of the throne on which the Virgin is seated, reveals the dedication of the fresco. In the vault of the apse we find the depiction of Christ blessing within a mandorla supported by angels.
