Blocks with signa militaria

Relocated outside the Cathedral, they come from the tomb of a Roman centurion

The two blocks are reused in the first and second line of stones, one above the other, outside the main apse of the Cathedral of Venafro. They most likely come from the same funerary monument and have a decoration attributable to the military rank of its owner.

In the upper block the upper part of a series of military insignia is sculpted, separated, almost in the center, by a corona muralis (one of the most important honors for valor in battle), while in the lower one a rectangular banner and the cloth bandages pertaining to two leminiscate crowns can be recognised.

The presence of military insignia with imagines clipeatae, in the upper block, evidently portraits of the imperial family, contributes to qualifying the owner of the monument as a primipilo, given that this military insignia appeared exclusively in the first cohort. The dating to the early imperial age has recently been restricted to the Augustan age, due to the hairstyle of the female portrait. A third block decorated with military insignia, including one with an eagle, might belong to the same ancient monument and is now walled into no. 8 of Corso Lucenteforte.
