D'Alferio, family

Family rooted in Isernia, Venafro and Alife, founded their fortunes on the exercise of legal knowledge

A family of the highest order, deeply rooted in the patriciate of Isernia starting from the 13th century, founded its success on the exercise of law to serve the Crown. In particular, Alferio's bureaucratic career (14th century) triggered the process of ennobling the family, which was expressed in the progressive acquisition of land and feudal assets. Among other things, they were lords of Castelpetroso until the mid-15th century, when, at the behest of the Aragonese, they were succeeded by the Pandone counts of Venafro, not without an attempt to reconquer the fiefdom by Tommaso d'Alferio. Covella, his sister, married the noble Cristoforo Mancino di Venafro, brother of Bishop Antonio, and was buried in a chapel inside the Cathedral. A branch of the family is also known from Alife, where between the 13th and 15th centuries it appointed two bishops.
